Trulieve Payroll Tax Specialist
Position Overview
Trulieve, a leading emerging company in the cannabis industry, is looking for a Tax Specialist to fill a key role within the payroll team. This position is hybrid with significant remote work but possible travel to our corporate office. Candidate will report to the Director of Payroll.
The Payroll Tax Specialist is responsible for ensuring the Company’s ongoing compliance with all federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations. This role involves managing relationships with tax processing vendors to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements. The Specialist is responsible for independently analyzing, researching, resolving issues and addressing related tax inquiries. They will specialize in payroll regulatory compliance across all states in which employees reside. Which includes working with partners in Accounting, Human Resources, Third Party Vendors, and other internal departments on various initiatives. This role is both hands on and strategic, so the ability to work across both ends of the range is crucial. Responsibilities:
- Provide expert advice on payroll tax implications for multi-state operations, serving as an escalation point and trusted advisor for both the company and relevant stakeholders.
- Proactively manage the setup of state and local payroll tax accounts, including completing registration applications, submitting required documentation, and resolving any challenges that arise during the process.
- Responsible for addressing all incoming payroll tax notices and payments with discretion. Including researching internal and external resources to determine their status and possible coordination with vendors for resolution.
- Works with internal and external teams to address discrepancies, clarify tax obligations, and implement effective payroll tax strategies.
- Assists in tax-related employee queries.
- Maintain and help drive innovations and execution to support accurate and efficient day-to-day operations.
- Demonstrate self-sustainability by taking ownership of tasks and proactively addressing tax-related issues.
- Conduct audits of divestitures and business mergers to ensure all payroll tax accounts are accurately closed with filings as needed.
- Collaborates with auditors and 3rd party agencies to gather data for tax audits.
- Analyze and interpret tax laws and regulations to maintain compliance.
- Works on various ad-hoc projects requiring flexibility and strong problem-solving skills.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related work experience will be considered.
- 5+ years related experience processing high volume, multi-state payroll taxes for a mid-to-large size company.
- 5+ years of payroll tax experience with a complex legal entity structure.
- Prior experience filing and paying federal, state, and local tax.
- Consistently achieves goals by prioritizing work and resources appropriately.
- Advanced Microsoft office skills (Excel, Word)
- Able to work in a high growth environment under tight deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work collaboratively.
- Utilize tools such as PAYCHEX, SharePoint, ZenDesk (ticketing system), and MS Suite (Outlook, Excel) in daily tasks.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills and ability to prioritize different levels of complexity.
- High level of attention to detail, technical and analytical skills.
- Independently manage and coordinate all tax accounts at local, state, and federal levels within a complex multiple entity structure.
Salary will be commensurate with experience. A comprehensive benefits package including paid time off is offered with this position. This position will work an average of 40 hours per week and will be available “after hours” if an emergency situation should arise.
