Job Title: Senior Product Manager, Portfolio Strategy
Business Unit: Retail, Retail Support, Product Development
Location: Phoenix, AZ (on-site)
Reports To: Director of New Product Innovation
Role Summary
The Senior Product Manager, Portfolio Strategy owns the strategic and consumer-grounded decisions about the portfolio itself: what gets prioritized, what gets rationalized, and what the annual calendar should look like. This role reports to the Director of Product Innovation. The Senior Product Manager will work closely with the Program Management team (Program Managers organized by state cluster) and will be the primary cross-functional lead for Ops, R&D, Compliance, and Commercial on all active portfolio programs.
Responsibilities
- Own the annual product calendar: refreshes, LTOs, and seasonal programs across all active markets
- LTO ideation and brief writing: leading concept development, validating the consumer case, and handing off a complete PRD before development begins. LTO briefs require the same rigor as any other product launch.
- SKU rationalization recommendations in partnership with Sales, Ops, and Retail
- Program prioritization: assessing in-flight programs against business impact and making clear recommendations on what moves, what waits, and what gets cut
- Stage gate progression for portfolio programs, in partnership with the Program Management team
- Creative brief ownership: writing the brief for Creative and Packaging, reviewing execution against it, and flagging when direction drifts. Accountable for the brief, not the final artwork.
- Product perspective in pricing and promotional conversations; brings the consumer and portfolio lens into those workstreams without owning them.
- The Senior Product Manager owns the why and what of each program. The Program Management team owns the how and when.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 5-8 years of product management or portfolio management experience in CPG, cannabis, or a closely adjacent regulated consumer industry
- Demonstrated experience managing a portfolio of SKUs (refreshes, line extensions, discontinuations), not just launching new products
- Experience owning or co-owning an annual product launch calendar with real deadlines, real SKU counts, and real commercial stakes
- Track record of cross-functional alignment: working with R&D, Ops, Compliance, and Sales as genuine partners
- Experience working within a regulated industry and/or alongside internal compliance teams.
- Ability to prioritize across a high-volume program mix based on business impact
- Must be at least 21 years of age and able to pass a comprehensive background check.
- Cannabis industry background (preferred)
- Familiarity with retail channel dynamics and exposure to consumer insights methods: jobs-to-be-done research, shopper studies, post-launch performance review (preferred)
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:
- Frequently required to remain in a seated position for extended periods of time.
- Must have visual and auditory acuity with or without aids to perform all functions of the position.
- Accurately communicate and exchange sensitive information and ideas with others, observe/inspect details at varying ranges; operate computing devices.
- Occasionally required to move/traverse throughout entire facility, including tight spaces both in office and within retail locations.
- Occasionally required to manipulate objects of varying sizes and weights (e.g., products, packaging, tools, office machinery): push/pull objects up to 25lbs; lift/carry/position objects up to 25 lbs.
WORK SCHEDULE
Work hours are standard M – F office schedule and may vary based on leader request, business needs and travel as needed. Travel up to 20% of work schedule to support the needs of the business.
