Remote Work Available: Yes
Job Title: Lead Load Testing Engineer
Department: Information Technology
Reports to: SR Manager of IT QA & Automation
Location: Remote
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lead Load Testing Engineer owns the performance testing strategy and leads the design, execution, and continuous improvement of load, stress, endurance, scalability, and capacity testing across customer-facing and enterprise platforms. This hands-on leadership role translates business demand, service-level objectives, and production usage patterns into realistic workloads; identifies bottlenecks across application and infrastructure layers; and provides evidence-based release and capacity recommendations. The role partners with engineering, architecture, DevOps, product, and operations teams while coaching performance engineers and embedding performance validation into the delivery lifecycle.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Strategy and governance: Define the enterprise performance engineering strategy, standards, tooling roadmap, nonfunctional test approach, entry and exit criteria, and risk-based coverage model.
- Workload modeling: Convert forecasts, analytics, architecture, and production traffic patterns into representative user journeys, arrival rates, data volumes, concurrency profiles, and peak-event scenarios.
- Test engineering: Design, code, review, and maintain reusable performance test frameworks and scripts for web, mobile backend, API, microservices, messaging, batch, database, and integrated workflows.
- Test execution: Plan and lead baseline, load, stress, spike, endurance, scalability, failover, and capacity tests in stable, production-like environments.
- Observability and analysis: Correlate response time, throughput, error rate, saturation, resource utilization, logs, traces, database behavior, and infrastructure metrics to isolate constraints.
- Root cause and optimization: Facilitate technical investigations across application code, JVM or runtime, network, database, cache, messaging, cloud, and container layers; validate improvements through controlled retesting.
- Release readiness: Establish performance baselines, thresholds, service-level objectives, and pass/fail criteria; deliver clear go/no-go recommendations with residual risks and mitigations.
- Continuous testing: Integrate targeted performance checks and trend analysis into CI/CD pipelines, with actionable alerts for regressions.
- Capacity planning: Provide data-driven forecasts and recommendations for scaling, infrastructure sizing, peak readiness, and performance-related investment.
- Leadership: Prioritize team assignments, review technical work, mentor engineers, improve estimation and delivery practices, and build performance engineering capability across delivery teams.
- Stakeholder communication: Present findings, risks, tradeoffs, and remediation priorities to technical teams and senior leaders in concise business terms.
- Operational excellence: Maintain test assets, data, environment controls, dashboards, runbooks, and lessons learned while promoting repeatable and auditable practices.
KEY DELIVERABLES:
- Performance test strategy, roadmap, standards, and reusable templates.
- Workload models, test plans, test data requirements, and environment readiness assessments.
- Version-controlled scripts, utilities, pipelines, and execution schedules.
- Execution dashboards and status reporting covering scope, progress, blockers, and defects.
- Performance test reports with baselines, trends, bottlenecks, root-cause evidence, and prioritized recommendations.
- Release-readiness assessments and documented risk acceptance or remediation decisions.
- Capacity models and peak-event readiness plans.
- Team quality metrics, asset health reviews, and continuous-improvement backlog.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 7+ years of software quality, performance testing, or performance engineering experience, including 2+ years leading engineers or complex cross-team initiatives.
- Advanced hands-on experience with at least one modern load-testing platform such as k6, Apache JMeter, Gatling, or LoadRunner.
- Strong programming or scripting skills in Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, C#, or a comparable language.
- Demonstrated experience testing APIs and distributed systems, including microservices, databases, caches, queues, and event-driven integrations.
- Experience with observability and analysis tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, AppDynamics, Dynatrace, New Relic, Splunk, or cloud-native monitoring services.
- Working knowledge of CI/CD, Git, containers, Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure, test-data management, and production-like environment design.
- Ability to explain complex findings, quantify business risk, influence technical decisions, and lead troubleshooting across organizational boundaries.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience supporting high-volume eCommerce, retail, financial, telecom, healthcare, or other business-critical platforms.
- Experience with cloud cost-performance optimization, traffic replay, resilience testing, chaos engineering, service virtualization, or synthetic monitoring.
- Knowledge of SQL, database performance diagnostics, networking, Linux, JVM or managed-runtime tuning, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Relevant cloud, DevOps, testing, or performance engineering certifications.
SUCCESS MEASURES:
- Critical services have approved workload models, measurable performance objectives, and current baselines.
- Performance risks are identified earlier and resolved before production release.
- Test results are reproducible, traceable, and delivered within agreed timelines.
- Release recommendations are supported by clear evidence, ownership, and mitigation plans.
- Automated performance coverage and trend visibility increase across delivery pipelines.
- Capacity decisions and peak-readiness plans are driven by validated data.
- Team capability improves through coaching, standards adoption, and reusable engineering assets.
